5000 Co2 FREE Miles & How I Became the ECO HERO

My family and I went out to run some errands the other day. While driving I looked down at the odometer and realized that we where almost to the 5000 mile mark. So we decided to drive around until we hit the mark. What a great pollution free drive.
It got me thinking of all the stuff that we have driven to with out 1 ounce of pollution going in the air or on the ground. It also helped me remember all the great events and volunteer events that I attended.
My car is how and why I became the Eco Hero. I know it sounds weird but around here no one else owns a car like this. Also not to many of these cars are direct solar like mine is.
So when schools started to ask me to bring my car by and show it to the kids it made me realize that I had a unique opportunity. I had children with sponges for brains that could change the future wanted to see what the future could be! But the car alone wasn't going to get them interested in saving the planet so ECOGEECO was born. It took some convincing to get teachers to sign up for me to visit there school. Originally they had me come by to show the car and that was it. Now they have a green haired person that drives a huge golf cart and talks about gas made from algea and showing worm poop in an old soda bottle. After a few teachers signed up and I went to more events people in the community started to notice me. After a while it started getting harder to schedule all the events and I had to start to turn them down because I was already going to be at 3 that day.
Being the Eco Hero is not about being famous but instead it is about helping anyway I can anywhere I can. I hope to show people that the world can be a better place if we all just try a little and work together. But the famous part is helping a little :)
My journey is still just starting and I plan on doing this for as long as I possibly can. The world is getting there but it needs help. Every little bit counts!

A special thanks to everyone that has helped me on my way and a very special thanks to my wife for believing in me when told her that I was going to dye my hair green and talk at schools. She is my inspiration.

Bentonville Senior Center event #61

I had the great honor of being asked to visit the Bentonville Senior center. I will have to admit that I don't normally perform in front of this age group. But I am hear to save the planet and all it's people. I knew that I could help by talking to this great group.
I first let them know what I normally do. I then told them that I wanted the children of earth to keep the planet like they used to. I showed them that kids in today's world believe that everything is disposable, not like when they where growing up. We don't patch our old jeans or repair shoes. Instead we toss and buy new! The kids of yesteryear didn't go to the mall and buy a ton of clothes and then only wear the thing one time.
I hope to help the children of today will learn from our parents and grand parents before the old ways become the the no one knows the way?
All in all everyone had a great time and they loved the car and they really seam to like my hair :) !
PS... No pics this time I was to busy talking to everyone ha.

Special thanks to Susan Moore Director, for inviting me.

Bentonville Has Honered Me

A few months ago the City of Bentonville on behalf of the Mayor nominated me for a Botanical Gardens of the Ozarks "Gardenfest Award". I WON the "Longstanding Green Leadership Award"

I am honored and humbled. I want to give a special thanks to Danielle Shasteen, The Mayor and all my other great friends that nominated me. I met most of them when i volunteered for them or with them.

The award itself is a Dogwood Tree and a plaque to be placed in front of it. I unfortunately had to miss the award ceremony but the Gardens have asked me where and when i want my award ceremony. WOW how great is that. So i am planning something BIG! (stay tuned)

BUT until then... They wrote up a great article in the City News Letter about it. This letter is sent out to all the residents in the city. Check out page 7. It actually made me blush a little. Don't worry i blush green! Here is the article (.pdf) Also on a total coincadence 2 of my boys are on the front page of the same letter. On the top of page 1 My sons Jarred and Jaiden are helping cut the ribbon to a new park. Check it all out>>   http://www.bentonvillear.com/docs/admin/newsletters/june_2010.pdf

A Visit to TERRACYCLE

My family and I had a great opportunity while on vacation. We had the chance to visit Terracycle head quarters in Trenton, NJ. If your not familiar with Terracycle they are here to "Outsmart waste". They do this by taking what would normally go to the landfill and in turn change it into great reusable products. These products range from simple Reuse shopping bag to back packs and even shoes made from candy wrappers. I use a lot of these products in my kids shows because this is how you ReThink everything to be more sustainable. The kids love the idea that nothing needs to go to a landfill but instead can be turned into a great product that can be use over and over again.

When we arrived I met Emily Bradford. She works on all the "Media stuff" for Terracycle. I have been in contact with here via Twitter and email for the past few weeks. She gave us the grand tour of the whole facility. We first met Albe he has been with Tom from the start and we caught up with him in between meetings. The office was made up of old office furniture that was salvaged before going to the landfill. Some of it even came from near by Princeton University. What a great way to keep it out of the landfill. The office is currently under remodel and they are making new desks from the cardboard tubes that the wrappers come to them on from various companies. They then use extra doors from companies (yes doors) as the desk top. They are always looking at ways to keep things out of the landfill! We also saw the "Lab". This is the best part of the tour. In hear we saw a lot of what might come out next or what didn't make it. We also saw the first Worm Poop machine! This is what got them started in the beginning. I recently used this same worm poop on a dying Bonsai tree and it is now very happy and covered in leafs again.

All the products from this company are made from trash. This would make you think that the products would no be a good quality but this is not true. Everything that i use in my show and everything that i saw that they make or are going to make is of the best quality possible. My family and I personally use these products in my everyday life. They stand up to anything that we throw at them. My son has used his Capri Sun Back Pack and lunch box all year long and it will be good for next year to use again.

After I left there office I realized that Terracycle has started something that no one else on earth has done. They have taken Trash and made it into treasure. You can say that others have done this before but they have turned it into there whole purpose. This is what they do! If you look at other companies they only recycle or upcycle to make there company look good or for the bottom line. It is great that places do this and yes they really do want to help the Earth but they continue to do other things that are harmful to the environment around us. Terracycle on the other hand does not produce anything that it does not upcycle or recycle from someone else’s waste. The mantra of Terracycle is "if someone has to pay money to take it away, Why not make something of it and reuse it forever?" If other companies took a step back and looked at all that they do and changed the product from start to finish then they would be a lot more like Terracycle.

The whole tour was great and the company is doing a great thing for our planet! I really want to thank Emily for setting this up and giving us a tour. I also want to thank Albe for taking time to meet us during his busy schedule. If your ever in the Trenton NJ, contact them and see if you can come by and see where the magic happens! I know that you wont be disappointed.
Check out there site and all the products they make. http://www.terracycle.net/
